Are you Afraid of the Dark?: “The Tale of the Guardian’s Curse” (S3E08)

Plot Summary

In this adventure-tinged horror tale, cousins Josh and Cleo accompany Cleo’s archaeologist father to a museum where he’s preparing a new exhibit on Ancient Egypt. The centrepiece is a recently discovered mummy—Queen Nefra, and a mysterious golden amulet said to hold her guardian’s power. Despite warnings, Josh’s curiosity gets the better of him, and he accidentally disturbs the queen’s sarcophagus, awakening an ancient curse.

Strange events follow: artefacts move on their own, eerie hieroglyphs glow at night, and a shadowy guardian stalks the museum halls. The cousins soon realise the guardian is protecting Queen Nefra’s spirit, seeking revenge on anyone who defiles her tomb. To end the curse, Josh and Cleo must return the amulet to its rightful place before sunrise—or risk being trapped in the museum forever.

Highlights:

  • A fun mix of Egyptian mythology and supernatural horror.
  • The museum setting provides rich atmosphere and visual intrigue.
  • The guardian’s design and movements are genuinely menacing.

What Doesn’t Work:

  • The story leans on familiar mummy tropes and predictable scares.
  • Some dialogue feels forced, especially in the exposition-heavy middle.
  • The resolution is quick, leaving questions about the curse unanswered.

Final Thoughts

“The Tale of the Guardian’s Curse” offers a dose of classic mummy horror with a youthful twist. It’s a solid adventure story that captures the thrill of ancient secrets and supernatural justice. While not the most original episode, it’s packed with nostalgia and delivers enough eerie fun to satisfy fans of both Are You Afraid of the Dark? and classic monster tales.
